As a Biological Science Technician (Fisheries), you will be responsible for assisting one or more professional biologists in completing all phases of fish population and aquatic habitat assessment studies and research projects, including project planning; developing and maintaining logistical arrangements; completing field work; data entry, verification, analysis and summary; and completion of project updates, interim and final reports and manuscripts.
Assisting in the planning of biological surveys and multifaceted studies by contributing ideas, determining appropriate sampling methodologies, establishing practical procedures; and development of logistical plans for accomplishing and reporting the work.
Capturing, identifying, handling, counting, and tagging juvenile and adult resident freshwater and anadromous fishes; assessing aquatic habitat conditions and habitat use by fish and other aquatic biota; and collecting physical, biological, and other water resource related data to determine actual and potential impacts of water development and habitat restoration projects on fish resources.
Developing and using spreadsheets and automated databases to enter, organize and perform preliminary analysis and summaries of collected field data, using standard statistical methods in preparing fish and other aquatic resource reports; and preparing segments of recurring monitoring reports.
Providing work direction and guidance, including compliance with all safety regulations, to lower graded technicians and volunteers while in the field.
Physical Demands: Work requires some physical exertion, such as regular and recurring running, walking, or bending; walking or climbing over rocky areas, uneven surfaces, through dense vegetation, and in mountainous terrain; rowing inflatable rafts, catarafts, and other nonmotorized boats to observe, collect, or record research data; and snorkeling and wading in swift cold water.
Work Environment: Work is performed in an office and outdoors. Exposure to adverse weather conditions or weather extremes such as cold, dampness, humidity and/or insects are often encountered in the performance of the outdoor work. Safety precautions and protective clothing or gear are required when working around water, and with chemicals and equipment. Work occasionally requires immersion in swift cold water for long periods of time.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants for the GS-5 level must meet A, B, or C below:
A. I have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 level in the federal service. Specialized experience is defined as 1) Conducting surveys of aquatic species and their habitat; AND 2) Recording and summarizing data collected during fishery surveys. NOTE: Your resume must contain sufficient information in both areas to be found qualified.
B. I have successful completed a full 4-year course of study above high school education leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of scientific or technical courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must be directly related to fishery subjects, such as fishery biology, ichthyology, limnology, aquaculture, etc.
C. I have a combination of specialized experience and education as described above, that, when computed as percentages of their respective requirements, equals at least 100% when combined. Only education beyond the second year is creditable to meet this method.
Applicants for the GS-6 level must meet A, B, or C below:
A. I have one year of full-time specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level in the federal service, or equivalent non-Federal experience. Specialized experience is defined as working with crews, mostly independently, 1) identifying and monitoring number and distribution of fish species; 2) conducting stream habitat surveys and/or habitat restoration monitoring; AND 3) entering data into a central database, ensuring quality assurance and control. B. I have a combination of specialized experience and education as described above, when prorated, combine to meet the qualification requirements of this position. Promotion Potential: This position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed represent the performance level of GS-6. At the lower grade level, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-7. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds.The selectee may be promoted without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met.
