Major Duties:
The incumbent is a Research Plant Pathologist at the Jackson, TN worksite of the Crop Genetics Research Unit in Stoneville, MS. The incumbent’s research will focus on identifying and effectively utilizing host plant resistance to the soybean cyst nematode to reduce losses from this pathogen. The assignment includes basic and applied research on the biology and management of the soybean cyst nematode and involves linking laboratory data with field results.
The main objective of this research program is to develop improved management practices to reduce soybean cyst nematode reproduction in soybean fields in the southeastern U.S. Specific objectives include: 1) identify new sources of resistance to soybean cyst nematode in exotic plant introductions from the U.S. soybean germplasm collection; 2) contribute to the development of breeding lines with resistance to soybean cyst nematode; 3) identify effective cultural practices to maximize the long-term utility of resistance genes to manage soybean cyst nematode populations and mitigate shifts in “races” (HG types); and 4) evaluate advanced breeding lines in the Southern Soybean Uniform Test for reaction to soybean cyst nematode.

Basic Requirements:
Plant Pathology Series (434): Degree: plant pathology; or a related scientific discipline that included at least 20 semester hours in basic botany or plant science, and 10 semester hours in plant pathology.
Additional Requirements:
In addition to meeting the basic requirements described above, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below.
GS-12: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service or possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; OR possess an equivalent combination of graduate level education and experience. Graduate education must be directly related to the work of the position and must have equipped applicants with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.
