This kennels staff position is located at Denali National Park and Preserve, Alaska. The duty station is the Sled Dog Kennels at Park Headquarters, located near Healy, Alaska. Duties include a variety of tasks associated with the park's kennels and backcountry resources including: daily care, training and feeding of park sled dogs; preparing and presenting informal and formal interpretive activities and safety presentations to a variety of audiences; grounds and dog yard maintenance; backcountry equipment repair and maintenance; providing trip planning assistance; backcountry travel (primarily by dog team in winter) to support visitor use, maintenance, research, educational and service learning groups; and data collection and entry.
This position is supervised by the Kennels Manager and works closely with the Backcountry Logistics Coordinator. Most duties are completed outdoors. Some of which involve remote, trail-less backcountry travel and camping in interior Alaska in which a high level of physical conditioning is a necessity. This environment regularly involves a high level of situational awareness to negotiate exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress (wildlife, exposure, weather, uneven terrain). Kennels staff must be able to safely handle large, vigorous sled dogs, maneuver a heavy dog sled (up to 400 pounds loaded), and be able to travel on uneven terrain such as river bars, tundra, ice, snow, and through brush.
Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.

Permanent Career Seasonal: This is a permanent, career seasonal position. The work schedule provides for at least 26 weeks (13 pay periods) of full-time work and up to 26 weeks (13 pay periods) of non-duty/non-pay time per year. It is possible that work time can be extended. When your services are not required due to lack of work, lack of funds, weather conditions or for other reasons, you will be placed in a non-work/non-pay status. You will have the option to continue your health coverage while in non-pay status. Non-pay time is expected to occur in the months of May through August, for 6-8 pay periods.
