As a Research Geophysicist within the Earthquake Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:
-Formulates and carries out fundamental and applied research utilizing GNSS, InSAR, and other deformation data to quantify seismic hazard.
-Participates in collaborative research involving geodetic observation and modeling for crustal deformation and tectonic studies.
-Publishes research in scientific journals and gives presentations at scientific meetings with broad international attendance.
Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?
Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued.

Basic Education Requirement
A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.).
*OR*
B. A combination of education and experience -- at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS FOR GS-13:
In addition to the Basic Requirement, candidates must have at least 1 year of specialized experience at or equivalent to at least the GS-12 level that is in or related to the duties described above, and that has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position.
Examples of such experience include: Planning and conducting scientific research in one or more fields of geophysics, geology, oceanography or physical sciences as related to earthquake hazards, sedimentary geology, and structural geology; participating in geophysical expeditions in marine or lacustrine environments and in the analysis of geophysical aspects of marine research cruises; participating in marine geophysical field studies and conducting various data analyses on seismic reflection data; authoring publications in scientific or technical journals; and making presentations of scientific findings at scientific or technical meetings.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS FOR GS-14:
In addition to the Basic Requirement, candidates must have at least 1 year of specialized experience at or equivalent to at least the GS-13 level that is in or related to the duties described above, and that has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position.
Examples may include:
Serving as an independent researcher conceiving, formulating, conducting and leading research studies in applied mathematics, seismology, geophysics, engineering seismology, and/or geotechnical engineering; working closely with state and Federal agencies, universities, non-governmental organizations, and private industry; authoring publications, peer-reviewed journal articles, scientific reports, and/or other products of considerable interest to science and/or technology in the area of specialization; presenting results of research at scientific meetings, professional societies, interagency meetings, and before the general public; critically reviewing manuscripts and proposals of other scientists; serving on professional and technical committees with other government and non-government scientists; and addressing information needs.
