Summary

WHAT DOES A TAX EXAMINING TECHNICIAN DO? As a Tax Examining Technician you will resolve inquiries regarding tax account issues such as tax delinquency, adjust taxpayer accounts and provide information about general Service procedures. In this role, you will analyze and take appropriate actions as identified in the specific position for which you are applying. Your assignments may include communicating with taxpayers and their representatives regarding their accounts on notices issued. If you are selected for a bi-lingual position you will communicate with taxpayers in Spanish as well as English.

WHAT IS THE WAGE AND INVESTMENT (W&I) DIVISION? The Wage & Investment Division (W&I) serves about 122 million taxpayers who file upwards of 94 million returns each year. Key W&I objectives are to provide high-quality taxpayer assistance, and to enable taxpayers to transact and communicate electronically to file their returns, make payments and receive assistance. W&I partners with private organizations to provide assistance to such disadvantaged groups as elderly and low-income taxpayers.

Help

As a Tax Examining Technician you will:

  • Evaluate all available information and take corrective actions, such as credit transfers requests, re-computed tax, and/or penalty and interest.
  • Access relevant systems to view and/or update taxpayers' accounts regarding payments received, review status of the case, and/or to make account adjustments.
  • Enter data into automated system to adjust tax, penalty, and/or credit adjustments.
  • Recognize indications of tax fraud; make determinations and use sound judgment concerning taxpayers' data and responses.
  • Gain cooperation of taxpayers by explaining the best options available to resolve the problem or question, mutual interests, and to make sure they understand their responsibilities.
  • Interpret the law as it relates to the issues and if affects the performance and efficiency of the Internal Revenue Service.
  • Educate taxpayers on action(s) needed to achieve compliance with tax filing/liabilities.

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

GS-5 LEVEL: You must have one (1) year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-4 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes: researching and/or initiating actions on tax issues and all required information for correction of accounts and records; Interpreting taxpayer information; Verifying and/or adjusting taxpayer accounts; Securing payment of delinquent taxes; and/or determining financial, and uncollectible information. Other examples may include: Technical advisor, OJT coach, classroom instructor, or reviewer. OR
You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows: A Bachelor's degree or four (4) years of education above high school in any field of study from an accredited college or university. OR­­­­­­­­­­­ You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. Options for qualifying based on a combination will be identified in the online questions.



- The experience may have been gained in the public sector, private sector or Volunteer Service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • We may select from this announcement or any other source to fill one or more vacancies.
  • This is a Bargaining Unit position.
  • Alternative work schedule, staggered work hours or telework may be available.
  • Tour of Duty: Monday-Friday 4:30pm-1:00am
  • Length of Season: 6 to 8 months, that may be extended if needed
  • Eligible for Health and Life Benefits
  • All Training will be held in Andover, MA.
