This position is in NASA’s Pathways Intern Program which provides students with the opportunity to explore NASA careers and gain meaningful developmental work experience. This position is for an engineering student trainee in the High Temperature and Smart Alloys Branch located in the Materials and Structures Division at the NASA Glenn Research Center. The Branch conducts fundamental and applied research on advanced metallic materials, including high temperature nickel-base superalloys, copper alloys, shape memory alloys, and magnetic alloys.

You will be assigned to a team developing advanced metallic materials technologies for aerospace applications. Work will include research focused on structural metallic materials for high temperature and extreme environments. Work will include aspects of computational materials engineering and metallurgical process modeling, data analytics, structural mechanics, fracture mechanics, and structural performance testing of metallic materials. There will be an emphasis on performance and durability assessment of additively manufactured metallic components for high temperature applications.
This appointment is expected to start no earlier than June 2018, and last at least 1 year. You must have at least 1 year remaining in your studies before you complete your degree requirements. The expected completion date you enter in the NASA Supplemental Questionnaire will be used in making this determination.
Applicants who indicate a graduation date prior to June 2019 will be found ineligible.
You will be required to sign a Pathways Participant Agreement.
You will be required to undergo a pre-employment background investigation.
To be eligible for this position, you must be pursuing a degree in Materials Engineering, Material Science, Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering*, Welding Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering.
Degrees in engineering technology are not qualifying for these positions. Engineering degrees must be from a college or university school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum. *Majors in Metallurgical Engineering are qualifying for conversion if the curriculum includes or is supplemented by twelve semester hours (or the equivalent) in physical or adaptive metallurgy, high-temperature metals and alloys, or cermets.
