Internship appointments under the Internship Experience Program (IEP) are non-temporary and can last the duration of the student's academic program. This will be determined at the time of selection. Interns may work full-time or part-time schedules.

The Office of Information Programs and Services (IPS) is responsible for the Department’s FOIA program, as well as other information access programs. IPS maintains the agency’s policies and procedures so that they are in compliance with FOIA, executive orders, FOIA Amendments, case law, and other government-wide policies and guidelines. Student Trainee's working in this office will assist the staff in processing FOIA requests for the Department.
As a Student Trainee (Government Information) GS-04, you will:
As a basic trainee, incumbent assists higher level Government Information Specialists in coordinating FOIA requests for information and in providing advice and guidance to management, staff and the public regarding disclosure of Departmental records under the Act, exemptions from full or partial disclosure, confidential business information, appeals of information denials and fee waivers. Helps research and review FOIA requests, clarify issues in requests and evaluate need for further information. S/he participates in responses to FOIA requests involving multiple programs and offices, in reviewing incoming requests for clarity and reasonableness and in contacting requesters for clarification and to discuss document availabilities. Increasingly reviews FOIA responses to ensure their proper coordination, regulatory compliance and responsiveness to the requests. Assists higher level employees with their service as regional contacts and coordinators for FOIA issues that include interpretation of GIS and IPS policies and development of formal guidance related to release of information under FOIA and the Privacy Act. The trainee participates in development, implementation, management and recommendation of improvements in the administration and operation of regional FOIA programs. Assists in conduct of organizational assessments of FOIA programs and with development of methods and procedures designed to improve and streamline the FOIA process and measure the potential impact of FOIA activities on program operations in the assigned Division. S/he participates in development and delivery of training and briefings on FOIA and Privacy Act regulations, policies and procedures.
The incumbent participates in maintenance of stable and established records management programs for multi-functional regional level organizations and programs within IPS. S/he helps maintain such programs that include a centralized records function, standardized handling and retention of records, improved records management, conversion of records from paper to electronic and film data and document searches. Assists in development of tools designed to promote effective coordination of the programs, and analyzes, evaluates and helps resolve problems and issues involving the development of records management systems, conversion from paper to electronic files, automated retrieval processes and utilization of archiving and storage systems.
The incumbent acts in a developmental capacity in using qualitative and quantitative methods and techniques to assist in the analysis and evaluation of the effectiveness of the organization’s information access and response and records management programs and operations in meeting their established goals and objectives. S/he participates in recommending, developing and monitoring programmatic and operational performance metrics, and in analyzing such data to identify program slippages and their impact on the organization. Assists in integrating program financial, technical, procurement and scheduling information with performance metrics results in providing Office and Division management with preliminary reports and recommendations designed to enhance their program operations.
Receives instruction and training from higher-level Government Information Specialists on the processes and procedures necessary to utilize qualitative and quantitative methods and techniques needed to assist in analysis and evaluation of the effectiveness of the organization’s information access and response and records management programs and operations in meeting their established goals and objectives. Increasingly participates in recommending, developing and monitoring programmatic and operational performance metrics, and in analyzing such data to help identify program slippages and their impact on the organization. Develops ability after appropriate training to integrate program financial, technical, procurement and scheduling information with performance metrics results in providing Office and Division management with preliminary reports and recommendations designed to enhance their program operations.

For example, 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours is comparable to 1 year of undergraduate education.
An academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 academic year of full-time study. This determination is made based on normal course loads for a full year of study in the graduate program.
