Duties: The Librarian serves as a Medical Librarian at the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Medical Center (MVAMC). Duties are to assist the Chief in decision-making issues related to range of service and resources, establishment of policies and procedures, and training, attend meetings, representing the Chief, when appropriate and may be responsible for official duties in the absence of the Chief and assists with these duties as requested. Physical Requirements: The work involves regular and recurring physical exertion such as long periods of standing, bending, stooping and reaching; lifting of moderately heavy (up to 25 pounds) items such as boxes, stacks of books or equipment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The majority of the work assignments are accomplished in a general office setting, the work involves ward visits and moderate risks requiring special safety precautions due to the regular and recurring exposure to infectious disease and mentally unstable patients.
Time-in-grade: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. For a GS-11 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-09 level.

BASIC REQUIREMENT: The Librarian Series, 1410, has Individual Occupational Requirements. All librarians must meet the basic requirements for professional education in library science or possess equivalent experience and education as shown below:
I have completed 1 full academic year of graduate study in library science in an accredited college or university, in addition to completion of all work required for a bachelor's degree. (Copy of Transcripts required at time of application).

I have completed a total of at least 5 years of a combination of college-level education, training, and experience. To qualify on this basis, the applicant must establish conclusively that the education, training, and experience provided a knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and techniques of professional librarianship; a knowledge of literature resources; and the knowledge and abilities essential for providing effective library and information services.
Specialized Experience: In addition to meeting the basic entry qualification requirements above, applicants must have directly related education and/or specialized experience.
Applicants must have One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-09) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Serves as an expert in reference and information research; monitoring, evaluating, and selecting resources and publications in all formats; performs work that requires full professional knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices of librarianship to select, organize, preserve, access, manage, and disseminate information; provides the organization with reference/research using text and online searching principles, reader's advisory/selective dissemination of information, circulation, programming and library instruction, marketing/public relations.

Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-11 level. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-11. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position.
