The Office of Inspector General (OIG), works within the U. S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to promote efficiency and effectiveness, and prevent or stop waste, fraud and abuse in departmental programs. We do this through audits and investigations. OIG also consults with the Congress about programs in progress and proposed new laws and regulations. The Inspector General Act of 1978 gives the Office of Inspector General autonomy to do its work without interference. OIG carries out its mission by issuing audit reports, evaluations, management advisories, and other products with findings and recommendations to improve program delivery and performance.
The Office of Investigations within the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Office of the Inspector General (OIG) is seeking students interested in gaining a competitive edge and marketable experience through an opportunity with the Federal Government. The DOT spends billions of dollars on programs, contracts and grants every year. Ensuring effective and efficient program performance and minimizing waste and abuse through sound management practices is an ongoing challenge for DOT. The Inspector General’s (IG) Office of Investigations conducts criminal and administrative reviews of DOT’s direct contracts and the contracts of DOT grant recipients. The IG’s office of Investigations also conducts criminal investigations concerning the departments regulated entities safety compliance. As a member of this group, you will learn about DOT’s mission and lines of business, become informed on Federal programmatic and acquisition policies and regulations, and are introduced to the Federal criminal investigative process.

In our student volunteer position, you will participate in various phases of the investigative process such as planning, research, analysis, and some field work. As a student volunteer, you will also experience and collaborate with the various other groups that support an IG investigation effort, such as legal and legislative staff, auditors, and statisticians. You will be afforded opportunities to interact with and learn about the various administrations that comprise the DOT. As a student volunteer, you will gain enhanced skills and knowledge, and acquire hands-on experience and insight into the role of Federal agencies and the criminal justice process. Your student volunteer experience will provide resume and skill building opportunities in a top Federal agency with the mission of serving the transportation needs of the United States and keeping the traveling public safe.
