This position is located in the China Branch in the East Asia and Pacific Division at the Voice of America in Washington, DC. The incumbent serves as the China Branch Chief and has overall responsibility for the management, leadership, programming and editorial direction for the high-quality journalism of the VOA China Branch, producing multimedia content in Mandarin and Cantonese targeting the People's Republic of China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, covering China and its relationships with the United States, the region, and the world.

The Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG), an independent federal agency, is an exciting, multi-cultural organization that encompasses all United States civilian international broadcasting. The BBG is comprised of five networks broadcasting in 61 languages that include the Voice of America, the Office of Cuba Broadcasting (Radio and TV Marti), and three grantee organizations - Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty; the Middle East Broadcasting Networks (Alhurra TV and Radio Sawa), and Radio Free Asia. The International Broadcasting Bureau provides transmission, administrative, and other support services; and three grantee organizations. Duties include, but are not limited to:
-Responsible for the management, leadership, and strategic direction of a multimedia news operation made up of a large staff of managers and supervisors, and through them writers, editors, broadcasters, reporters, producers, and other content producers.
-Responsible for the overall quality of the content produced by the Mandarin and Cantonese Services, ensuring accurate, fair, and unbiased reporting and adherence to the VOA charter and journalistic code.
-Responsible for the programming and editorial direction of content produced by the branch in Mandarin, Cantonese, and English, including its output on the branch's 24/7 television channel, Internet, and social media, plus radio broadcasts.
-Provides broad direction of the branch's editorial organization, including its workflows, selecting subject matter to be covered, execution of its stories, and their presentation in the various media produced by the branch.
-Exercises sound editorial judgment based on expert-level knowledge of China and its relationships with the U.S. and other regions of the world, and journalistic experience in the region.
-Uses consumption metrics and audience knowledge to determine the usefulness of China Branch products, including usage, affiliations, program research, and other BBG impact measurements.
-Responsible for the recruitment of staff and contractors, including domestic and overseas stringers and ensures their contribution is consistent with VOA standards; Recommends training as appropriate; manages the China Branch general operating budget; oversees the China Branch domestic and overseas bureaus.
Suitability Determination: If selected, you will be subject to a security investigation to establish your suitability for federal employment. The security investigation will include, among other aspects, a review of your credit and legal history.
This position may require working nights, weekends, and holidays.
This position has been designated supervisory requiring that the selectee on an initial appointment as a supervisor or manager serve a one-year probationary period.
