To qualify at the GS-12 grade level, you must have at least 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal government. Examples of specialized experience include: planning and conducting projects and studies to evaluate and recommend ways to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of work operations in a program or support setting; developing new or modified organizational structures, management processes, or procedures for administering program services; preparing project papers and staff reports; organizing and delivering briefings to managers to encourage understanding and acceptance of findings and recommendations; presenting recommendations and negotiating solutions to disputed recommendations; performing a wide variety of analytical studies and projects related to management improvement, management controls, or long-range planning.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).
