About the Position:
The U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) is participating in an alternative personnel system known as the Laboratory Personnel Demonstration Project (DEMO). Among other features, the Demonstration Project replaced GS grade levels with occupational families and pay bands. The pay band DB-03 is equivalent to the former GS-12 Step 01 through GS-14 Step 10.
This position is located in the Computational & Information Sciences Directorate, U.S. Army Research Laboratory, at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. Aberdeen Proving Ground is located in Harford County, MD. APG sits on 13,000 acres with the Bush River to the east and the Chesapeake Bay to the south, offering many amenities to include recreation, sports, golf and child/day care facilities. In this position you will serve as a Computer Engineer or Computer Scientist to serve as the government lead of the US Army Research Laboratory (ARL) Data Analysis and Assessment Team (DAAC).
The DAAC is part of the DoD High Performance Computing Modernization Program (HPCMP) and supports and provides robust interactive data analysis tools (such as Secure Remote Desktop, EnSight, ParaView & VisIt), explores and promotes advanced visualization technology, participates in cross-HPCMP collaborations with customers, contractors and technology partners, and maintains a working relationship with other government entities (in particular Department of Energy) to promote and advance data analysis and visualization applications. The candidate should have research and leadership experience in the areas of scientific visualization, data analysis and high performance computing. The candidate should also be detailed oriented and able to manage application testing and development across a wide number of computation platforms in support of the HPCMP program and ARL and possess very good customer interaction skills in order to directly assist research customers with the completion of visualization tasks. Duties will involve individual and team-focused tasks to include code compilation, debugging applications, demonstrating application usage and working with customers.

Qualified candidates must meet the Basic Requirements for the Computer Engineer (0854) or the Computer Scientist (1550). In addition to meeting the Basic Requirement applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the DB-02 (GS-11 or higher equivalency) grade level.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: experience in the area of scientific visualization; data analysis; code compilation and debugging; and high performance computing(code development and/or application usage). This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (DB-02/GS-11).
You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas:
Basic Qualifications for General Engineer
Successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in professional engineering. To be acceptable, the curriculum must: (1) be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.
OR
Currently registered as a professional engineer by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico. Absent other means of qualifying under this standard, those applicants who achieved such registration by means other than written test (e.g., State grandfather or eminence provisions) are eligible only for positions that are within or closely related to the specialty field of their registration. For example, an applicant who attains registration through a State Board's eminence provision as a manufacturing engineer typically would be rated eligible only for manufacturing engineering positions.
OR
Succesfully passed the Engineer-in-Training (EIT) examination, or the written test required for professional registration, which is administered by the Boards of Engineering Examiners in the various States, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico. Eligibility is limited to positions that are within or closely related to the specialty field of the engineering technology program. (Documentation is required).
OR
Successfully completed at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and in engineering that included the courses specified in the basic requirements. The courses must be fully acceptable toward meeting the requirements of a professional engineering curriculum.
OR
Successfully completed a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in engineering technology or in an appropriate professional field, e.g., physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology, may be accepted in lieu of a degree in engineering, provided the applicant has had at least 1 year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance.
Basic Qualifications for Computer Scientist
Bachelor's degree in computer science
OR
Bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus.
