This position works in the Division of Interpretation and Education, interacting with park visitors and assisting them in understanding and appreciating the park's natural, cultural and recreational resources. Primary duties include researching, developing, and presenting thematic interpretative programs (guided walks, formal talks, illustrated and/or non-illustrated programs) on a variety of topics related to the history of the US-Mexico Borderlands Region. These programs are expected to meet national standards for interpretation. A significant percentage of time is spent staffing the visitor center and cooperating association Park Store. This position also sells Inter agency Recreational Passes. Roves park trails and makes informal visitor contacts. Collects and records visitor center use statistics according to instructions. Monitors stock of brochures, handouts, etc. for visitors. Offers first aid services to level of training and initiates appropriate emergency response when necessary. Prepares written replies to routine requests by email and on paper. Routinely disseminates safety and resource protection messages and performs routine administrative tasks as needed to support park operations and the Division of Interpretation and Education. Assists other interpreters with developing interpretive media and with developing and conducting special events and education outreach programs.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work involves extensive periods of standing and walking. In some cases over rough surfaces or inclines, carrying backpacks, tools, equipment, etc.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in setting in which there is regular and recurring exposure to moderate discomforts and unpleasantness e.g. high or low temperatures, confined spaces, or adverse weather conditions.
AREA INFORMATION: Position is located at Chamizal National Memorial situated in the center of an international metropolitan area which includes Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. The population of El Paso is 650,000. El Paso International Airport provides air service with direct flights to Dallas-Fort Worth, Phoenix, Denver, and other locales. Available housing is plentiful with both apartments and houses for sale or for rent. There are many options for K-12 schooling and the area is served by El Paso Community College and University of Texas at El Paso. A full array of medical facilities is also available. Government housing is not available.
Requirements
1. You may be required to serve a trail period of 1 year.
2. National Park Service (NPS) uniformed position. Employee will be required to wear a uniform and comply with NPS uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided to defray the cost of the uniform.
3. Applicants must possess a valid state drivers license. This position requires that you operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. A valid state drivers license is required.
